Sport and Recreation is aimed to improve the quality of life of the communities through sport excellence within our area of jurisdiction. uPhongolo Municipality has selected the following codes to be played within the communities:

Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Dance, Table Tennis, Athletics, Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Boxing, Golf, Tennis and Karate. The section is also responsible to execute the following activities for the benefit of the youth:

  1. Organize Sport Tournaments in all codes selected by the Municipality in different wards.
  2. Organize Beauty Pageant to identify youth talent and expose their talents
  3. Traveling along with different codes to the tournaments organized by the federations and the Department of Sport and Recreation to different areas.
  4. Organize and co-ordinate Mayoral Cup from Ward level in all 14 Wards of the Municipality until District level and SALGA Games.
  5. Organize and co-ordinate tournaments in partnership with Schools Sport, Business People for the benefit of the Youth of uPhongolo Municipality.
  6. Co-ordinate events organized by the Local Municipality, ZDM, DSR and KZN Departments when visiting uPhongolo Municipality.
  7. Organize Mayoral Schools tournaments to identify and develop talents of the youth in all codes selected and cultural activities.
  8. Assist federations financially for affiliation, transport, clinics, workshops and awards at the end of the season to those teams performed exceptionally well.
  9. Initiating sport campaigns, awareness and sport indaba regarding sport developments.

The section will be embarking on visiting all wards of the Municipality to assess facilities whether are in good condition or not and request the Municipality to blade all facilities needed to be bladed and renovations before the Mayoral Cup start at the beginning of August 2013. We want to ensure that all Athletes use conducive facilities in all 14 Wards of the Municipality.
